Calories measure energy. Your target is an estimate you can test.
A calorie is a unit of energy. On U.S. food labels, Calories describe how much energy one serving provides. Calories and kilocalories (kcal) refer to the same food-energy amount in everyday nutrition use.
Your body uses energy at rest, during movement, while digesting food, and through the rest of daily life. A calorie target estimates how much food energy fits a goal. It is a starting point, not a guaranteed result.
WHAT CALORIES TELL YOU
Energy quantity is one part of the decision.
Calories quantify energy intake.
That makes them useful for comparing intake with estimated expenditure and selecting a maintenance, deficit, or gain target.
Calories do not describe the whole meal.
Two meals can contain similar calories while differing in protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, volume, and how filling they feel. Energy quantity and food quality answer different questions.
Standard macro factors explain much of the total.
Standard label calculations commonly use 4 Calories per gram for protein, 4 for carbohydrate, and 9 for fat. Label rules permit additional calculation methods, so a hand calculation may not reproduce every displayed total exactly.

BMR is not a normal eating target. TDEE adds activity context and is usually the more useful maintenance starting point.

One day is not the whole pattern.
Travel, appetite, social meals, and training can shift daily intake. A higher day does not automatically erase a week, and a lower day does not guarantee progress. A weekly average makes the full seven-day pattern visible.

What is the difference between Calories and kcal?
In everyday nutrition use, Calories and kilocalories refer to the same food-energy amount. A food label showing 100 Calories is describing 100 kcal.
What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?
BMR estimates energy used at rest. TDEE starts with resting energy and adds activity context to estimate total daily expenditure, making it the more useful maintenance starting point.
Are all calories nutritionally the same?
A calorie always measures energy, but foods with similar calorie totals can differ in protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, volume, and how filling they feel. Energy quantity and food quality answer different questions.
Should every day have the same calorie target?
