Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals the body needs in relatively small amounts. They support many processes but do not contribute food energy in the same way protein, carbohydrate, and fat do.

The useful question is not whether one meal contains every nutrient. It is whether the repeated food pattern supplies an appropriate mix for the person and life stage.

MINERALS

Elements grouped partly by required amount.

Major minerals

Needed in larger amounts than trace minerals. Examples include calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and chloride.

Trace minerals

Needed in smaller amounts. Examples include iron, zinc, iodine, selenium, copper, and manganese.

DAILY INTAKE REFERENCES

RDA, AI, DV, and UL are not interchangeable.

Each term answers a different planning, labeling, or high-intake question.

Review repeated foods and portions

Look for nutrients that remain low or unusually high across several days, not a nutrient absent from one meal.

Treat low intake, deficiency, and symptoms as different claims

A food log can identify an intake pattern. It does not establish body status, absorption, or a diagnosis.

Check high-dose sources and interactions separately

Food, fortified products, supplements, and medications can contribute differently. Relevant upper limits and interactions are nutrient-specific.

What are micronutrients?

Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals needed in relatively small amounts. They support many body processes but do not contribute food energy in the same way protein, carbohydrate, and fat do.

What is the difference between vitamins and minerals?

Vitamins are organic compounds, while minerals are elements. Both groups contain nutrients with different functions, intake references, food sources, and storage characteristics.

Is Daily Value the same as RDA?

No. Daily Value is an FDA label reference used for percent DV. RDA is a Dietary Reference Intake value for nearly all healthy people in a specific life-stage and sex group.

What if a nutrient has an AI instead of an RDA?

An Adequate Intake is set when evidence is not sufficient to establish an RDA. It can still guide planning, but the two terms should not be treated as interchangeable evidence levels.

Should I aim for the upper limit?

No. A Tolerable Upper Intake Level is a high-intake boundary, not a recommended target. Some nutrients do not have an established UL, and the relevant value can depend on life stage and source.

Does hitting macro targets cover micronutrients?

Not necessarily. Two food patterns can have similar calories and macro grams while differing substantially in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and food variety.
