Macronutrients are nutrients your body uses in large amounts. In everyday meal planning, macros usually means protein, carbohydrate, and fat. Each contributes a different combination of energy, structure, and function.
A macro target translates a calorie target into gram amounts. It does not replace the calorie target, and it does not describe fiber, vitamins, minerals, food volume, or every part of meal quality.

The adult AMDR values are broad National Academies reference ranges for percentage of energy. They are not a claim that one percentage inside each range is ideal for every adult. Reference values also vary by life stage.
MACROS AND CALORIES
Grams explain where much of the energy comes from.
Calories describe the total energy budget. Macro grams divide much of that budget among protein, carbohydrate, and fat.
Understand calorie targetsStandard label calculations commonly use 4 Calories per gram for protein, 4 for carbohydrate, and 9 for fat. Regulations permit additional methods and rounding, so hand arithmetic may not reproduce every displayed label total exactly.

Protein
Protein supplies amino acids used throughout body tissues. A practical target can change with body size, training, goals, food preferences, and the rest of the plan.
Calculate a protein targetCarbohydrate
Carbohydrate includes sugars, starches, and fiber. Fruit, grains, beans, dairy, potatoes, and vegetables can contribute carbohydrate alongside water, fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Total carbohydrate on a U.S. label includes dietary fiber.
Fat
Fat provides more energy per gram than protein or carbohydrate. It contributes to cell structure and helps with absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Oils, nuts, seeds, avocado, dairy, eggs, fish, and mixed dishes can all contribute dietary fat.
CHOOSE A MACRO SPLIT
There is no universal ratio. Use a repeatable sequence.
Reference ranges provide context. Your actual target needs to fit the calorie budget, purpose, meals, and training.

Macros organize a calorie surplus, protein target, and enough carbohydrate and fat to support training and consistent eating.
READ A REAL MEAL
Add portions first. Judge the pattern second.
Use the Nutrition Facts label or a food-composition source for the portion actually eaten. Mixed meals require combining ingredients. A meal with 40 g protein, 60 g carbohydrate, and 20 g fat contributes about 580 Calories using 4/4/9 arithmetic.
40 × 4 + 60 × 4 + 20 × 9 = 580 Calories
Compare the full day or week with the target. One meal does not need to match the daily percentage split by itself.

Hitting grams does not finish the nutrition picture.

Protein, carbohydrate, and fat targets help turn a calorie goal into measurable meal components.
Food selection adds fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Two days can hit similar macro totals while differing in food variety, fiber, micronutrients, volume, and satisfaction. Macro accuracy and food quality are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Is there one best macro ratio?

Does fiber count as a carbohydrate?
Dietary fiber is included within total carbohydrate on the U.S. Nutrition Facts label. Fiber is not handled exactly like digestible sugars and starches, which is one reason hand-calculated calories may differ from a displayed label total.
What is the difference between macros and micronutrients?
Macros are nutrients used in larger amounts, with protein, carbohydrate, and fat contributing much of food energy. Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals needed in smaller amounts. Hitting macro grams does not guarantee complete micronutrient coverage.
